September 26: IHI Open School San Antonio will be screening Escape Fire for those who missed out. The event will be held at Trinity University, Chapman Auditorium at 6:00p. RSVP here!
April 4: IHI Open School San Antonio will be showing the popular documentary Escape Fire. It is a call to action that tackles some of the most pressing issues facing our healthcare system. The event will be held at UTHSCSA. Time: 5:30p-8:30p UTHSCSA Pestana Lecture Hall 3.10A
March 26: Toyota Plant Tour at 12:00pm- We are excited to announce that we will be visiting the Toyota Plant for a guided tour. This event will highlight some of the key Lean and Six Sigma principles used in the auto industry. We will learn about the cross-industry applications these principles hold in the healthcare sector. March 22: Collaborative Patient Safety Observation/Demonstration at 6:00pm in the UTHSCSA School of Nursing Skills Lab
February 11: Physicians for Human Rights and San Antonio Refugee Health Clinic. We helped visiting refugee homes to recruit participants for a study identifying barriers to health care access. We attended survey sessions at San Antonio Refugee Health Clinic (SARHC). It was a great opportunity to become more involved with Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) and San Antonio Refugee Health Clinic (SARHC) as well as get to know the local refugee population we will be working with in the hospital. We will also be looking to conduct future studies within this refugee population. If you are interested in summer research or conducting further research in the future, this is a great place to start!

December 4-7- Institute for Healthcare Improvement's 23rd National Forum in Orlando, FL. We are sending 3 of our students along with faculty advisers to present our open school chapter and 2 quality improvement projects, and to meet others who are equally committed to patient safety. The conference is the "premier meeting place" for people dedicated to providing safe, effective care. Visit the conference website for more information. November 18- Monthly general meeting at UTHSCSA, 4pm. Elections for office positions will take place. Location will be at UTHSCSA at the McDermott Clinical Science Building (Medical and Von Sheele), Room 2.104, 8403 Floyd Curl Drive, San Antonio, TX 78229. Office positions to be filled include president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, fundraising chair, project chair, and public relations/marketing chair. Please see article III of by-laws for position descriptions and election rules and terms. If you are planning on running for office on November 18, send an e-mail directed to Jessica Schwartz at [email protected] indicating what position you are interested in and why. For position descriptions and election rules and terms, please see article III in its entirety. You must be present at the meeting in order to run for office.
Office positions were filled as follows after interested candidates gave brief speeches denoting their background, interest in the respective positions, and their vision for the IHI Open School San Antonio chapter. Chapter members in attendance voted the candidates into office by acclamation.
November 6- RAMPAGE for PATIENT SAFETY! We are excited to bring you greatly discounted tickets to the San Antonio Rampage vs. Texas Stars ice hockey game! San Antonio Rampage ice hockey game at 3:30pm on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at AT&T Center. Tickets are $20 per ticket (Our IHI Open School chapter gets $7 of this) for a private luxury box seat. There will be free ice skating before game (1:30pm-2:30pm), including free skate rental! October 2- IHI Open School San Antonio will be showing the patient safety documentary Chasing Zero: Winning the war on healthcare harm hosted and narrated by the actor Dennis Quaid, this documentary is inspired by the near deaths of his twins from a medical error. It is a call to action that highlights the improvements that could be made in our healthcare system.
September 21- UTHSCSA, 12pm. Patti Grota, PhD, MSN, RN, from Infection Prevention and Control at the VA will present the hand hygiene project and highlight opportunities for student involvement. 2. Yvonne Busbee, vice president of IHI Open School at San Antonio and nursing student at UTHSCSA will talk about her experience with being involved with this project from a student’s viewpoint.
