San Antonio Chapter Projects
Hand hygiene project, supervised by Patti Grota, PhD, RN, at the VA. One of the several objectives of this project is to get all chapter members certified in hand hygiene, and then have them monitor compliance by observation in a given ward or unit at the VA or UHS.
Delirium Prevention in the Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) Unit at Christus Santa Rosa- City Centre. This project describes the approach to prevent delirium by implementing a delirium prevention protocol in the ACE unit. The goal is to increase compliance with the cognition and mobility portion of the protocol and to create a culture in which delirium became a priority for the staff, the patients and their families. The results show that compliance increased after implementing education based changes such as a bilingual brochure on delirium, a bilingual prevention white board and in-service training for the nurses. The next phase of the project is to implement a vision and hearing protocol to further help patients maintain their cognitive levels.
